Created just one year before his death, the project represents a moment of recovery for the eighty four year old artist, after a period of struggle. The artist had recently moved from Púbol Castle to the egg-topped Torre Galatea in his native Figueres, after a fire broke out in his bedroom. Though the circumstances of the incident are unclear, Dali’s declining psychological state following his wife’s death in 1982 is likely to have been the cause. Whether or not the result of a suicide attempt by the artist, the need to move out of the castle brought about productive change to his emotional state. Escorted, by his friend, Robert Descharnes, to Figueres, Dali re-established emotional equilibrium, producing high quality work that included commissions for Olympic medals in 1984 and 1988.
